Statement from NYSDC Chair June O’Neill

ALBANY, NY – New York State Democratic Committee Chair June O’Neill today issued the following statement on Congresswoman Kirsten Gilliband’s appointment to fill the vacant Senate seat:

“The New York State Democratic Committee congratulates Congresswoman Gillibrand on her appointment by Governor Paterson to serve as our great state’s junior Senator.

Her upbringing in the Capitol Region and time spent working in New York City, combined with her service as special council to HUD and tenure in the House of Representatives, give Congresswoman Gillibrand a unique understanding of the issues facing New Yorkers.

Congresswoman Gillibrand has been a true leader in Congress – working on legislation to implement the 9/11 Commission Recommendations, demonstrating a bold commitment to government transparency, and continually advocating on behalf of New York’s middle class and working families.

We know that as Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand will hit the ground running to deal with the most pressing issues we face. During this challenging economic period, our new Senator will help find ways to ensure that education does not suffer, health care becomes more accessible, and jobs are returned to our state.

The NYSDC looks forward to working with Congresswoman Gillibrand over the coming weeks and months as she steps into her new role as our Senator. We believe that she is the right choice for this position and will help be a part of the change that our country and our state need.”
